Føtex

In short
Føtex is one of Denmark's largest supermarket chains, with a long-term ambition to play an active part in improving the way Danes eat. As the chain prepared to extend its brand platform beyond marketing, SJ&K advised on the public dimension of the work: the choices, the alliances and the readiness required to turn a commercial platform into a story that belongs in the wider conversation about food.
Project details
Føtex has established a solid middle position in Danish retail. Quality, but not exclusive; reasonably priced, but not the cheapest. That position makes functional differentiation harder than it is for a discount chain. At the same time, it opens the possibility of standing for something rather than simply offering something. The company's long-term ambition is to help improve Danish food habits, and its brand platform is built to carry that ambition.
Making that ambition public, however, is a different discipline from marketing. A story about how Danes eat has to hold in national media, among food professionals and in public debate. When a supermarket addresses food culture as such and speaks about the meal as a place where people come together, it must also be ready to discuss its own role in such a debate.
SJ&K advised føtex on that transition. The work started with a brand and positioning analysis, a mapping of the stakeholder and media landscape around the meal as a subject, and an issues assessment of where the story was likely to be read most attentively and questioned hardest. It continued through a structured workshop with føtex's marketing organisation, where the underlying strategic choices were made explicit on the sender architecture, the news value, and the longevity of the platform.
The conclusions were translated into a strategic PR plan. Communications objectives were defined to measure the effort against, and the plan set the sequencing, activity types, genres, and channel strategy, together with a messaging structure, talking points, and a stakeholder mapping. Finally, it comprised a risk analysis and issues readiness framework for the questions the position invites.
The result is a foundation that lets føtex take part in the conversation about food habits and food culture on its own terms – documented rather than asserted, and robust enough to be carried in-house.
