Baltic Energy Island

In short

Baltic Energy Island is the Bornholm-based foundation that brings together business, research and local actors around Energiø Bornholm, the Danish-German energy island in the Baltic Sea. SJ&K advises Baltic Energy Island on strategy and stakeholder relations as the project moves from political decision to realisation.

Project details

Energiø Bornholm combines 3 GW of offshore wind with an electricity interconnector between Denmark and Germany. The project is part of the European Commission's Energy Highways agenda, and with the intergovernmental agreement between the two countries in January 2026, it has entered its implementation phase. In the years ahead, offshore wind farms, transmission infrastructure and onshore facilities on Bornholm will take shape, and the island's own power grid is set to be connected to the energy island.

Baltic Energy Island was founded in 2023 to help Bornholm make the most of that development. The foundation has no formal authority over tenders, permits or grid design.

Its role is to connect. It brings together energy companies, suppliers, research institutions and local stakeholders, runs skills and innovation programmes for local businesses, and hosts the international Energy Island Forum on energy islands and offshore grids. Together with DTU, it is building an innovation and knowledge hub in Rønne's historic power station.

The ambition is for Bornholm to be more than the site of a large infrastructure project: a place where the energy systems of the future are tested, understood and shared. That ambition spans very different communicative spheres, from the island's own community to national decision-makers and partners in Germany and Europe.

Across these strategic arenas, SJ&K supports Baltic Energy Island as an adviser in their endeavour to bring together various actors and innovative technology for the betterment of European energy infrastructure.
